Facebook is known for its in-house hacks. The healthy hacking culture of Facebook has produced ideas such as like button, tagging, rainbow over the profile picture, Facebook Messanger etc. Here are the 7 most famous in-house hacks of Facebook in 2015.
React+Oculus: Real-time coding for virtual reality
This is one of the most interesting hacks, it enables a developer to code in real time while wearing the Oculus headset. React+Oculus was developed by two Facebook engineers during an infrastructure hackathon.
According to the product manager Chris Marra, the team used Facebook’s React library to replace the DOM renderer with a custom version that utilizesthree.js. As a result, while wearing the Oculus Rift headset, a user will see a dot that contains a window with components rendered in virtual reality. These selectors can be used to edit objects users are seeing, in real time.
On-Board Optics
This in-house hack helps make server hardware switches cooler and helps in maintaining the internet congestion on the server. Using on-board optics, the Facebook team was able to run a 300GB-per-second link over multi-mode fiber.
Celebrate pride
Recently you have noticed rainbow colored profile pictures on Facebook. These rainbow colored profile pictures were invented to show pride and support some cause over the internet. This idea of celebrating pride was invented by two interns at the Facebook. In just 72 hours, the duo leveraged Facebook’s existing code to create the tool. The filter was such a success that more than 26 million people updated their profile pictures with it on the weekend after its launch. Celebrate pride was used mostly to support social causes, sports team or some major step taken in this world.
Stetho
Stetho was created as a debugging platform. It also has the privilege of being the first open sourced Android project by Facebook. This tool, which works as an extension, can be used to examine network traffic, view hierarchy, query SQLite databases etc. There are also other open source projects by Facebook which are available to the world.
Boomerang
Boomerang became an instant hit when it was ported over to Instagram. It’s more like a continuous mode sports pictures. With one touch, a user can take a series of pictures. These series of pictures can then be combined together to create an animated GIF like file.
Warp Speed Data Transfer
To curb the hustle of slow transfer of files between two databases, two Facebook engineers created Warp speed Data transfer. Those two engineers created an embeddable library and command line tool that will transfer files at more than 500GB per second. Later this hack was made open sourced, and the company says it’s adding new features to it regularly — including, most recently, encryption.
Securing email communication from Facebook
Every event and action taken by a user over Facebook involve users’ privacy. The communications taking place within the social network should also be private. Keeping these things in view, a team of engineers created a way for users to add OpenPGP public keys right to their profile, allowing them to receive encrypted email notifications.

We might have started dreaming of turning Mars into a living habitat just like it was done in Martian movie and the same dream NASA is harbouring for years. But, we still do not know how we are going to survive the journey and how we are going to pitch the first peg of our tent.
The space vehicle which drives the astronauts into space is not larger than a pickup truck and it takes at least six months to reach the Mars. Also, astronauts should need their own space. Even if this space vehicle capsule will be linking to a habitation module in space, then at the moment no one has the idea that how the space module is going to look like and how astronauts are going to live once they get to the Mars.
Well, these things which provide ample support to this debatable topic do not seem available, but NASA has been given sufficient fund to build a habitat by 2018. At this point of time, NASA is totally blank as to what the habitat would look like and how it would function. Shielding astronauts from space radiation while also maintaining light weight will be one of the major challenges.
Looking at the futuristic challenges, NASA is already in talks with bigger companies like Boeing and Bigelow Aerospace on potential habitats in space. But looking at the deadline ahead, NASA could be forced to really speed things up now to comply with Congress’s wishes.
At least for the moment, we just need to use our imaginations and draw references from movies to guess what habitats on Mars are going to look like because NASA’s International Space Station director told it’s far too early to release any mock-ups.
So what is your view on how habitat is going to look like on Mars? Is it really possible?

As reported by Adrian Ludwig, Android’s lead security engineer, Google has taken the recent Linux zero-day issue seriously. However, according to Perception Point, the company which reported the problem, this current vulnerability has an effect over around 66 percent of all the Android devices including phones and tablets.
Though the Perception point was aware of the problem, it was not reported to the Google by them. But according to Google, fortunately, because of the upstream work of the Linux team, Google was ready with a patch.
Ludwig writes:
“We have prepared a patch, which has been released to open source and provided to partners today. This patch will be required on all devices with a security patch level of March 1, 2016 or greater. We believe that no Nexus devices are vulnerable to exploitation by 3rd party applications.
Further, devices with Android 5.0 and above are protected, as the Android SELinux policy prevents third party applications from reaching the affected code. Also, many devices running Android 4.4 and earlier do not contain the vulnerable code introduced in Linux kernel 3.8, as those newer kernel versions not common on older Android devices.”
According to Google, the claims made were not of so much of importance and it is also not going to affect many devices. All the operating systems have some issues but before making a hype out of that is not advisable until the reported problem is a real one.
Faceook has surpassed the oil company Exxon Mobil to become the fourth most valuable company in the world by market capitalization.
According to recent market trends, there are two reasons which have been attributed to this rise:
- Surge in the market value of the world’s largest social networking company due to increasing income as more and more Facebook users are joining this social networking site and,
- Declining in the market price of the oil and layoffs in the oil giant Exxon
The four tech giants which top the list are: Alphabet (Google), Apple, Microsoft, and Facebook.
After Facebook had gone online in the share markets, many investors at the Wallstreet had raised a finger about the capability of Facebook over making money from the internet users. Unlike other top three companies, Facebook mainly relies on its website.
However, ever since then, Facebook has not looked backward and now, it is seen as the rare fast-growing technology company that is capable of beating Wall Street predictions in terms of revenue growth.
Apple, the number one the list for the last 13 years, was not able to gain the first position. We also have another interesting article about the history of Apple which explains how Apple has evolved above the time. Despite its more than $200 billion cash pile, investors still are not convinced enough that Apple has a bright future ahead.
For the same reason, Apple lost its title as the world’s most valuable company to…..Google. Google, which has recently come up with a new name and organizational structure, is being seen as the company with several potential products in the pipeline.
Two-factor authentication is amongst many options, yet one of the most underestimated methods, to improve your online security. If you haven’t enabled the 2-step verification for your password protection yet, then it is time you go for it.
When Google itself recommends methods to stay safe online, then it is time you understand the gravity of the situation and adopt some security measures. As most of the news feed nowadays is filled with cyber attacks and security breaches rendering the connected users helpless, each and every effort to safeguard yourself counts.
After editing the security options, you will get a confirmation code to your mobile number each time anyone (including you) tries to access your account.
Two-factor authentication is one of the methods to strengthen your online security. It provides an additional layer to your standard password protection system using a second electronic device. Mostly, it utilizes your phone number for verification and gives alerts whenever your account is being accessed.
Almost all the services like Google, Facebook, Yahoo, PayPal, Twitter, Snapchat, Microsoft, LastPass offer two-factor authentication. So, all you have to do is just go to the website that you have your account on and enable the two-factor authentication protection system.
Here is how to enable two-factor authentication for various services.
How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication For Google?
- Simply type Google two-step verification on Google search and go to the www.google.com/landing/2step and scroll down to Get Started. Follow the prompts.
- Confirm your phone number and choose how would you like to receive the verification code.
- Enter the Six digit code that you would immediately receive and verify.
- The next question that Google will ask you is to confirm that your current machine is a trusted system like your home desktop, so it won’t ask you for 2 step verification whenever you are on that system. Else, you will get the alerts.
- Enable the 2-Step-authentication by clicking Confirm.
After you have confirmed for the 2-step-authentication, Google will send you additional protection features.
- Verification Codes for any Back-Up options
- App-specific passwords for your specific apps and devices.
- Backup Codes
How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication For Facebook?
- Sign-in to your Facebook account and go to the Settings option.
- Choose Security on the left column and click Edit on the Login Approvals.
- Select “Require a security code to access my account from unknown browsers.”
- An information window will open that explains how the login approvals and two-factor authentication works. Follow the commands and activate the protection system by submitting your phone number.
However, if you have already registered your number with Facebook, simply go to the Security settings and Edit the login factors.
After editing the security options, you will get a confirmation code to your mobile number each time anyone (including you) tries to access your account.
So, enable two-factor authentication for the services you use and stay ‘safer’.

How to Earn Money on YouTube
You’ve probably heard stories about regular people earning money on YouTube and thought, “Hey, I can do this too!”. While earning thousands of dollars probably isn’t realistic, you can start earning money quickly, especially if you have a strong subscriber base. Follow this guide to get your videos monetized and start earning revenue off of those YouTube ads. It's easy!
-
1Set up and build your YouTube channel. Your channel is your personal presence on YouTube. Each YouTube account has one channel attached to it. A YouTube account is the same as a Google account, and creating a YouTube accountwill grant you access to other Google products, such as Gmail and Drive.
- Create your account or use your existing one. Add keywords to help people find your channel. You can add keywords by navigating to the Advanced section of your Channel Settings. Make sure that your keywords are relevant to your content.
- Your user name can also work for or against you. If it’s short, easy to remember, and original, people will be more apt to remember you. However if you are using an existing account, just stay with it. It doesn't help if you keep changing accounts.
-
2Add content. Try to upload content that is high quality, and isn't super long. (This option can vary depending on what type of content you decide to upload) Also try to upload regularly and stay consistent with your uploads.
- Even if your content isn't great at first, keep at it. Practice makes perfect. Try to make each video better than the last. You will often learn as you go.
- Improve your content by either using a better camera or trying better editing software or techniques. Also try to improve the way things are filmed. Use a tripod, have a friend help you or light your scenes better. It all helps for a better end product which in turn helps you get a better audience.
- By uploading regularly you can help hold an audience. People are more likely to subscribe if you add content on regular schedule, and maintain that schedule as much as possible.
- Make sure to tag your videos with key words that describe the content, as well as an eye-catching description. These will help drive people to your video from YouTube searches.
-
3Gain an audience. Building an audience is key to increasing your monetization. You need people to watch your ads in order to make any money off of them. There is no one secret to getting more subscribers, just make the best content that you can and they will come to you.
- Keep uploading content and try to get people hooked. Send your video out on Twitter and Facebook. Share it with people. Distribute it elsewhere on the internet. Subscribers are essential to becoming a partner.
- Interact with your viewers by responding to comments and making occasional videos directly related to viewer comments and questions. Connecting with your community will bring more members into that community.
-
4Monetize your videos. In order to start earning money on your videos, you’ll need to enable monetization. This means you are allowing YouTube to place ads in your video. This also means that you acknowledge that there is no copyrighted material in your video.
- You can monetize a video as it uploads by clicking the Monetization tab and checking the “Monetize with Ads” box.
- To monetize a video after it has been uploaded, open your Video Manager and click the “$” sign next to the video that you want to monetize. Check the “Monetize with Ads” box.
-
5Setup Google AdSense. You can setup Google AdSense for free at the AdSense website. Click the Sign Up Now button to begin creating your account. You must be 18 years or older to create your own account. If you are younger than that, you will need an adult to help you.
- You need either PayPal or a bank account and a valid mailing address as well as other information so AdSense can verify who you are and who to send the money to. You only gain money per ad click and a smaller amount per view but it adds up over time. This is why having an audience is key.
-
6Check your analytics. Once you have some videos online, monetized, and being viewed, you can check out the analytics on them to see how they are performing. Click the Analytics option in your Channel menu. Here you can view estimated earnings, ad performance, video views, demographics and more.
- Use these tools to see how your content is resonating with your audience. You can change your content or your marketing if you’re finding that you aren’t attracting the users that you want to.
-
7Market your videos elsewhere. Don't put your videos just on YouTube! Start a blog, make a website or post them on other video or social media sites. The more views it gets, the better. By sharing the link or embedding the video on the internet, you are increasing the chance of it getting noticed and of you making money.
-
8Become a YouTube partner. YouTube Partners are YouTube members who have monetized videos with a large number of viewers. Partners gain access to more content creation tools, and can win prizes for the number of viewers they have. Partners also get access to much more community support and tips.
- You can apply for YouTube partnership at any time through the YouTube Partner page. In order to gain access to the most powerful Partner programs, you need to have 15,000 cumulative watch hours for your channel over the last 90 days.
The enchanted-looking tree above harbors a wondrous secret.
Using an ancient technique called “chip grafting,” artist and Syracuse University professor Sam Van Aken has carefully nurtured trees that can bear over 40 different types of stone fruits, including peaches, nectarines, apricots and almonds.
The process is one of patience: Over several years, Van Aken splices branches with buds of various varieties into a base branch called the “working tree.”
By springtime, the “Tree of 40 Fruit” sprouts pink and purple blossoms. In the summer, the tree begins to bear fruit of all kinds.
“Part of the idea behind the Tree of 40 Fruit was to plant them in locations that people would stumble upon them,” said Van Aken speaking to National Geographic in the video below. “And once they happened upon one of these trees, they would start to question ‘Why are the leaves shaped differently?’ ‘Why are they different colors?’”
